Foul smell from top loading Kenmore washing machine

I have a 9 year old top loading Kenmore washing machine that occasionally emits a very foul, musty type odor. It will go away temporarily after using bleach, but it later returns.

I recently posted on this board regarding another issue. This prompted me to remove the washer's cabinet to fix the problem. The inside of the outer tub had a large amount of what looked like accumulated lint and/or dirt. I think that this may be holding water and causing the musty/moldy smell.

Do you think this is the cause of my problem? If so, how can I clean the area between the two tubs where the accumulation is? If this is not the cause, what do you think is causing the smell?

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Get a gallon of clorox and fill the tub up with hot water. Pour in the clorox and let it sit overnight. Repeat as nessesary.

 I've cleaned a few machines with the bad smell problem. You have to take the cabinet off to properly clean the top of the tub. If you have a job where your clothes get greasy the buildup is quicker. It's also a good idea to leave the lid open after washing so the machine can dry.

May as well throw my 2-cents worth in there...

Most of the buildup can be avoided in the first place by:
1. Don't wash in Cold water
2. Don't use fabric softener.
3. Clorox will not remove the residue
4. Use Affresh Washer cleaner to remove most of the buildup without a teardown.
