Kenmore 80 Series Washing Machine
« on: April 10, 2009, 09:32:38 AM »
Hi,

I have a Kenmore model #110.20882990. It sounds like I have a similar problem. My washer, approx 9 years old, will not spin. I hear the motor turning, but no movement of the tub.

If it is a stripped spin gear, is it worth repairing? If so, is it something I can do fairly easily? (I consider myself handy with tools.) Also, what would I need to buy? The entire gear case, coupler, spin gear only, etc.

Thank you,
Leo

Hi,

Chances are it's just a bad motor coupler.

The first thing you need to do is remove the washer cabinet and take a look at things.

Check out this motor coupler repair guide.

There is a Direct Drive coupling video on page 2 of the Whirlpool thread that might be helpful.

Thank you all for your replies. I took apart my washer as per the motorcoupler.pdf and the video on the Whirlpool page. I found that the coupler piece on the motor shaft was spinning freely because the hole was rounded. I think I should be fine after the new coupler is installed.

I'll let you know how it turns out.

Leo,
If it is not spinning, but TRYING to spin, the motor coupling has broken. Locate and remove the 2 screws that secure the console to the cabinet. Tilt the cabinet backwards, and remove the 2 gold clips, and disconnect the lid-switch harness. Tilt the cabinet forward, and off of the base. The motor coupling is located behind the pump, and then the motor (bot h must be rem0oved for access). The part number is 285753A (it might have an "A" at the end, if they have used up their old stock). I hope this helps! :)

Thank you to everyone who directed right to my problem. I installed the new motor coupler. (With the guidance of the tutorials I found on this forum of course!) It went very smoothly. Back up and running!
Thanks again! Great forum!

Just a point of interest regarding the new parts I installed. The plastic coupling parts have metal inserts now. The old ones were all plastic. Apparently, rounding off of the keyway causing slippage is a common problem. I should be good for awhile!

Unless something else breaks of course!  :(
