GE DC Evap Fan Motor

On these 12VDC Evap Fan Motors, there are four wires that go to the motor.

The Red and White wires appear to be the Main Winding.

What are the Blue and Yellow wires used for...??
Is there a procedure to check these wires...??
Is there a Schematic for this type of Motor...??

You are looking at an ECM, an Electronically Commutated Motor. The extra wires are different poles on this motor, as the main control board has the capacity to change the speeds invariably. Technically, this is a 3-phase DC motor

WHT = COM
RED  = HI Spd
BLU  = Either Med or Low Spd
YEL  = Either Low or Med Spd

No, that's not right. Where did that diagram come from?

The motor red wire gets 13.2 volts for high speed and 9.2 volts for low. The yellow wire is an RPM Hall effect sensor lead.

My question to you is this...why do you need this info?

Can't you simply tell us what's wrong with the fridge first? Makes it a bunch easier.

I guess you know the Artica and Profile refrigerator manual is on the front of this forum, right?

(A) The Diagram I drew up myself.
(B) The reason I want to know is for my knowledge trying to understand this circuitry.
(C) Problem is....Evap Fan Motor not running
(D) YES....I downloaded that manual. Similar to one I already had.

OK....So, the Red & White wires are the Main Motor Winding. Should be between 1.5 to 3.0K ohms.

The Yellow is a sensor from the motor to the CPU board. Tells the CPU how fast (RPM's) the motor is turning I assume.

What is the BLUE wire for ??

Inquiring minds want to know, eh?

If the motor ain't running and it's getting the correct voltage and is not shorted, replace the motor.

If you look carefully at the wiring diagrams contained in the manual you saw, you will see what the blue wire is connected to.

In fact, if you go straight to page 50 there is a chart to show you exactly where you stand if the motor is not running. You may need both the motherboard and the motor to resolve the issue, which by the way is a common malfuntion on GE units.

YES...I have read the troubleshooting chart and closely looked at the GE Wiring Diagram and realize that the Blue Wire goes to J2 Plug on terminal #1.

STILL.....what is the blue wire used for...

Obviously you did not read the manual closely enough...

Page 39 of the manual shows exactly what the colored wires on the J2 harness do, and what readings you can expect to get. Since the J2 is the fan output harness, the blue wire is part of the tachometer ciruit also. On a Hall sensor, there is a +com and a -com circuit. Remember this is low-voltage DC apparatus, requiring both poles to work in order to measure RPMs.

Want to show me where it states about "Hall effect Sensors", where it says that there is a (+) and a (-) to this circuit. Where the Blue Wire inputs to the motor and the yellow wire outputs to the board.

Sorry for being a 38 year veteran to the Refrig service trade. I am accustom to AC Evap fan motors and trying to learn this DC application and circuitry.

I showed you what you asked for, which was the purpose of the blue wire and how to check the voltages according to the manual. You now know about as much as I do when it comes to diagnosing, since I and all the other technicians use the same manuals when we do a call.

If you want to learn about how things work, there is a plethora of information out there about DC motors and ECMs.  This is mainly a help site for common people to get help  with their appliance problems, not to teach a 38-year service-man how special motors work. Excuse me if this is not the kind of help you were looking for, but we don't usually do research like this for free. I will help you all day long to fix a particular problem, but there are limitations to what we can teach on a forum like this.
