Whirlpool Washer Leaves Soap, Rubber burning smell

The above washer with any other than light load gives off a smell of burning rubber and leaves a soap film on the top of the tub--also does not appear to rinse properly. Any ideas?

 I assume this unit is 10 years old--what is the life expectancy?

The life expectancy on this machine is estimated between 7-12 years. Since it is the easiest of the top loaders to fix and by far the least expensive, I tend to think the life expectancy is what you make of it. 


In your case, it sounds like the clutch may need to be replaced, due to the fact that you are experiencing a poor rinse & intermittent spin issues. What would you estimate the average labor charge for a clutch change?

The unit is approximately 10 years old at this time and has not seen heavy duty. If it would cost more than $200 for a repair I would just replace it.
