Maytag washer sounds like a plane taking off during spin cycle.

Hi Guys,

I was just at my uncle's the other day, and his washer sounds like a plane taking off during the spin cycle. I think it may be like a plastic on plastic kind or sound. Maybe a bad bearing, or something needs to be lubed ?
The machine is only a couple of years old. I told him I'd look into fixing it for him.
I've done a few repairs on my old washer before. (Also a Maytag) I'm very knowledgeable in automotive technology. I figure If I can replace an engine in my Camry, I can fix his washer.

Could be the bearing on the pump. The bearing is known to seperate in these.

It's funny that you mention that. I replaced a pump that had locked up on my PAV2300AWW a couple of years ago.

The SAV205 is an Amana platform machine and does not have a pump like that. You are looking at a new triple-lip seal and tub bearing, hardly something you want to  delve into without all the funky tools needed to remove the tub hub & bearing.

The SAV205 has not been made since 2004 so the machine is at least 4-5 years old, not 2.

How much do you think an appliance repair tech would charge to replace the seal and tub bearing ?

I would guess between $125-$175 total labor. It would not hurt to call around on Monday and ask your locals what their rates are, now that you have an idea of what's involved.

Thanks for the quick reply. I'll call around tomorrow, depending on the price I may have it done, or I may order the tools and tackle the job myself.
