Whirlpool direct drive problems

I have a Whirlpool direct drive washer that stopped agitating or spinning, and I began researching how to fix it. Since it would drain the water but not agitate or sping I first suspected the coupler. When I began to dis-assemble the machine I noted there was a dusting of what appeared to be fine rubber on top of the motor. I now believe that to be the beginning of the heavy wear of the coupler which still seemed to be intact. So I knew it would probably not stop the spinning or agitating in that condition. Next I turned my attention to the other possible culprit, and my further reaserch convinced me that the clutch was to blame. Unfortunately replacement of the clutch did not fix my problem, and now I am thinking the trans is at fault. is there a way to determine if the trans is bad with it out, or do you have to run the machine while watching? I am very new at this appliance repair effort, and any help would be greatly appreciated.

The motor runs when it should be agitating or spinning?

If the motor runs during the wash and spin cycle does it make any funny noises?

You should be able to turn the transmission by hand to check it.
Leave the one half of the plastic coupler on the transmission.
The put the rubber part of the coupler on.

Put a phillips screwdriver or some other round shank in one of the empty holes in the rubber coupler and spin it around by hand.

When you turn it one way the transmission shaft will agitate back and fourth.

When you turn it the other way the bottom part that attaches to the clutch will spin or if you still have the clutch on the transmission you will see the clutch spin.

Is the transmission clean or oily?

The trans looks perfectly clean and new. However the top of the motor had a fair amount of rubber dust on it from the coupler. The coupler looked like it had enough wear to account for the rubber dust, but still seemed to be able to turn the trans. Could the tub block be at fault?

Yes the motor runs fine, and it does not make any strange noises. It just does not spin or agitate.

Could the tub block be at fault?

It should still agitate if there was a problem with it.

Try turning the transmission by hand and let us know what you find.

If it turns fine by hand you will have to put it back together and run it with the cabinet off so you can watch it.

You will need to jump out the lid switch at the harness were it plugs into the cabinet to run it without the cabinet.
