Maytag Electric Dryer
« on: March 19, 2009, 07:52:27 PM »
The dryer trips the breaker after 10-15 minutes. I checked the outlet, the cord, all the thermostats and the element has continuity but it only partially glows and it is not touching the enclosure. As I'm writing this I'm thinking I should have checked the temperature switch. Any thoughts?

You could clamp a amp meter on the cord to see if it's really drawing to much or if the breaker is week.

What else happens after 10-15 minutes?

Does the dryer get to hot?

Does the motor change sound as if it's working harder?

Hope you find our site helpful.

What size breaker?
How many amps is the dryer drawing just before it trips the breaker?

It's a 30 Amp breaker and I don't know what it's drawing just before it trips. I'll check tomorrow. The dryer has been there for nine years. Nothing has been modified or changed.

Only a couple things I could think would cause this problem.

A bad connection on the cord or at the outlet.
Bad heating element, shorting out.
Bad motor, getting hot as it runs.

Maybe Repair-man or JW would have a better idea.

What would cause the heating element to only partially glow?

It might be you mailbox has the heating element grounded to the housing. You ain't gotta buy a whole new mailbox(heater housing) you can get a restring kit for less than 20 bucks.

The element does not "partially" glow...you only see it that way because air is being drawn thru the heater duct at 480 cfm. It's the same principle as blowing a candle flame. Don't expect the coil to glow bright red all the way down, the heat is being drawn off the coil and transferred to the airflow in the drum.

Check the power cord where it attaches to the dryer for loose connections. If you can OHM your heater terminals to ensure that the element is not grounded to the outer shell, then you have a bad breaker.

It was a bad circuit breaker. Thanks for all the help. Is it legal to change a circuit breaker with the homeowners permission?

Legal? Only if you do not get caught. Technically, only the homeowner himself can perform electrical repairs on the residence without being licensed.

I've done it in some cases, just have confidence in the person you do this for should  something happen.
