Frigidaire--Bad or Good
« on: March 21, 2009, 12:24:27 AM »
I have a question about Frigidaire. My brother has a Frig. upright freezer self defrost(not sure of model). It had stopped freezing so he called for service on it because they have a service agreement. The tech said the comp. was bad but he did something to it that got the comp to running again but told him he was ordering a new comp because he wouldn't trust this one to stay running. This was Monday and Wed night it was giving the alarm again and had quit cooling so he is waiting for the guy to get the comp and fix it.
My question is, this freezer is 7 years old and the guy said if he didnt have the extended warranty it would be cheaper to buy another freezer. I just bought a Frig SxS ref that is now 1 year old. I didn't take the extra warranty. Should I expect this with my ref. also ? I bought the Frig because I needed a new fridge pretty quick and I needed a counter depth and the dealer had this one in stock. He said that he didn't have any more trouble out of them than he did Maytag& Whirlpool which was the others he sold(and Amana) but I would have to wait for him to order those in my size.
Just hoping I didnt mess up by getting the Frig.

Also, I read where you were discussing the old Frig washers. My Mom had one for years. The clothes would be almost dry when they came out, and I believe those were the best cleaning washers ever made. I dont know what hers was called, model wise but it was a late 50's model. When she got a new one she got a Kenmore and was just sick because she said it didn't wash, rinse and sure didn't spin like her old Frig. Boy that Frig could tie the clothes in knots! LOL

Thanks for taking me back-I wish I could go back about 40 years...

The warranty on all the new stuff is only a year, compressor and all. Does this show you the confidence that manufacturers have in their products? And since the compressors apparently all come from Brazil now, it's not important whose label is attached.

The service tech came out and installed the new compressor. When he started it up the new one blew. He said he didn't know what was wrong so he was calling Frigidaire and talk to them about it. He did, and then they called my SIL and told her they would send her a new freezer in 48-72 hrs.

What do you think could have happened to this one that would cause it to destroy the new comp? He told my SIL he didn't know what it was unless it was something to do with the "coils, and that they were built in around it and he couldn't get to them"? I thought the coil was under the bottom or either behind it??

Not all service technicians are as professional as we might think, especially those from smaller, less trained companies than an actual factory technician would be. The fact that he had to call the Tech Line signifies that he was not familiar with common obstacles involved with replacing compressors. There is not much to go wrong unless he bungled a weld somewhere and potentially restricted the cap tube or something. There is no inherent reason a new compressor would fail unless there were other internal problems with the sealed system, which is sort of rare on freezers as a rule.

Frigidaire may have opted for replacement due to a known issue in the field, one that I am not aware of and likely not made all that public to avoid recall issues. Let's  leave it at that and  be glad they did the right thing.

The new one "blew". This sounds as tho there was an electrical problem and as stated not all repair technicians are as qualified as such.
I do not care if you work for factory service or not, replacing compressor without proper troubleshooting is like drilling a hole in the bottom of a boat to let the water out.
