Washer problem

Got a call from my ex mom in law that her washer had become disgruntled. The complaint was it makes a "Gawd Awful" noise when its in final spin. Now Im not sure where "Gawd Awful" ranks on the decible chart but I first assumed it was a bearing making noise. This noise started after 3 huge soaking wet beach towels were put in it.

I got to her house and ran it thru a couple of spin cycles and the only thing I could hear was a knocking. I put in a couple of wet dish towels and some wet t-shirts to create a load on it to see if it got louder.  Wasnt a loud knocking but enough to know somthing wasnt right.

I took the bottom cover off and noticed the left hand strut under the tub has grease everywhere on it and all over the wall next to it and is cracked and seems soft. The right hand one looks like new. Are these filled with grease?

Im going to order a new one and replace it this week.  I also gave her some customer education about how much she is stuffing in it. She doesnt use that much detergent. I asked her how much and she showed me. About a 16th of a cup of HE powder.

From your observation,the broken strut may be the only problem.
