A Rusty Load

The washer on our Maytag MLG2000AWW stack started producing a clicking sound in step with the speed that the spin basket rotated and now our last load of laundry came out with a bunch of rust colored stains on it.  I don't know if these two things are related or not.
I removed the spin basket and found a greasy (or maybe it is soapy) rust colored material on the inside of the outer tub behind the spinner tub support (see picture).  
Has this 9 year old stack reached the end of it's life or is this reasonably repairable?

You mght try replacing the tub seal, which is under that  spinner support. The material you described is a combination of detergent and fabric softener, but you appear to have seal deterioration by the looks of that photo. If your tub growls loudly during spin, forget the repair and start shopping for a different machine.

You have a unique perspective by virtue of seeing thousands of problems with washing machines and dryers and also being able to see the quality of the parts and designs in those machines.  Can I ask for your recommendation on a make and model of a front loading, stackable washer and gas dryer?

Hi Dudley;

I guess everyone is entitled to their opinion. If you ask a Sears guy what he recommends, it is whatever is paying the highest perk at the moment. Same goes for an independent who services a particular product more than others.

As for me, the next machine I buy after the Neptune 5500 goes out will be the Whirlpool Duet. (Not necessarily with steam and all that crap...more to break) Their Duet Sport Model stacks real nice.
