Go to the library and see if they have a copy of the book Modern heating and air conditioning or buy a used copy for $5 online. It will be the best money you ever spent:

What's this have to do with appliance repair?

When I started out (Washer on Noah's Ark)   :2funny: HVAC/R and Appliance Repair were in the same shop. Even when I worked for RCA servicing Whirlpool, we took care of Central A/C, Heating, Ice Machines as well as Appliances.
When teaching refrigeration I had students say "I don't want to do domestic". I reminded them that everyone who buys milk from one commercial reach in has a domestic refrigerator that eventually will need repair. O0

If your a appliance technician now and had a chance to start over would you pick a different career or would you stick with appliance repair?

This turned out to be a good career choice after 36 years...I found out that even though the economy is in a slump appliances still need to be fixed, and not everyone can rush down to Sears and buy new ones any more. My job is not in jeopardy, it has actually improved with harder times.

In the book  modern refrigeration and heating they have chapters on refrigerators ice machines and auto air. If you want to make money you need to know this stuff. If you interview on a job they ain't just gonna hire a washer man or a dryer man or a stove man.

I went to sears to get a job selling parts for them. They didn't hire me cause I couldn't sell extended warrantys or add ons too good. I had the attitude people wanted a part for their appliance not a sales pitch for soap or a warranty. But after seeing some of the posts about the newer stuff I bet I could now.
