Kenmore 80 Series Washing Machine

I have a Kenmore Series 80 washing machine that does not spin and makes a terrible noise that sounds like a gear slipping when in the spin cycle.  The door switch appears to working properly.  After reading several post I was certain it would be the coupler but upon inspection found it (the coupler) was not broken.  I did notice that when I move the coupler manually the motor and wheel in the pump move freely.  The shaft coming out of the transmission however does not move when I move the coupler.  I can move the shaft manually in either direction and wonder if the transmission is the problem.  Any help would be appreciated.

I would check the coupler again the piece attached to the transmission where it fits onto the shaft may be rounded out. You shouldn't be able to turn the coupler  and the shaft not move.

As you suggested I checked coupler where it attaches to the transmission and found nothing is out of round.  I reattached it and spun the coupler and discovered that the part at the base of the shaft and the shaft itself will occasionally spin.  When I do this it feels as it is slipping or the gears have a dead spot. Is this possible? And if so is it worth it to replace this part?

The coupler part that is on the transmission shaft should be very snug on the shaft if it feels loose in any way it should be replaced. For the cost of the part I would replace it and see if it solves your problem.

Coupler is very snug on the transmission.  I think its an internal problem with the transmission, is that possible.  Thanks again.

Did you remove the motor when you inspected it.

The spin gear is made out of plastic and can strip out seen it check out the pic:

I did remove the motor for easier access to the coupler.  I was beginning to wonder if any of the gears were made of plastic which was confirmed by the one gentlemen.  Thanks guys!
