Thanks for the input.  I did not replace the thermostat at the bottom, since it tested okay for continuity.  But I will ahead and replace that one.

How can I test the operating temperature of the unit?

Thanks!
-Marcus

Both of the thermostats on the heating element come in a kit.

Part # 3977393

The reason they come together in a kit is because they both need to be changed at the same time.

It does not matter if one or the other checks good. If one of them is bad then you need to install both of the new thermostats that come in the kit.

If you do not then you take the chance of them going bad again.

Thanks for the explanation AJ, I'll be sure to change them both out this time.

Should I also check the operating temperature of the unit as Mr. Fix It suggested?  And if so, how might I go about doing that?

Thanks again,
-Marcus

Your operating thermostat is part # 3387134.

Be sure to clean the lint out of the vent and from around the blower housing.

It would not hurt anything to check the operating thermostat.

The cut out temp is stamped on the thermostat. To check the operating thermostat you will need to measure the air temperature inside the dryer drum or at the exhaust.

If in doubt you may just want to replace the operating thermostat as they are not that expensive.

I use a oven thermometer that you can buy at any department store for about $5. You just put it in the vent with the vent hose off and run the dryer empty, on high you should be around 150 degrees if it gets much hotter than that replace the thermostats.

You Have cleaned the vent and vent terminal. You said that you checked the damper flap for operation, did you do it from inside or outside. If you did it from inside go outside and see if it has a stopped up varmint screen on it.
The correct thermal fuse kit for your dryer is 279816 (309F) you need to replace the High limit t-stat also included in the kit, IT IS BAD it not opening and causing the element to overheat blowing the TCO. To test borrow your honey's electric skillet, set the temp at 250 place the limit switch on the skillet face down check to see if the stat opened adjust the temperature up a little at a time until it opens, is within it's listed rating?

Hi all, I just wanted to thank you all for your help.  I replaced both the hi-limit t-stat and the TCO this last time, and it has been working perfectly since then.

Thanks again for your help and for putting up with a frustrated newbie.   :)

I too have a 70 series that will not heat.  Found Repair-Man's picture really helpful.  Did the checks and found the thermal fuse open circuit.  Bought the replacement kit at Sears.  Did all the clean outs and am ready to put it back together, but.....

The high limit thermostst comes with instructions to jump one side to the heating element.  My dryer has 2 wires coming from the harness to the thermostst and 2 wires to the element - no jumper.

Do I still need to jump something, or do I just reconnect as it was?

Thanks

Barry
