Icehouse, that was the anwser I was concerned about, moisture and oil
functionality. 134a conversion is not recommended for the same reason.
Just bought a 30lb jug because I got no negative feedback here. Maybe I
can sell the crap to automotive shop or have hold harmless letter drawn up
to add life to the old boxes

Most of the time  the dang gas is gone or real low right. So I always pull out the remaining gas and  reclaim it in my recovery machine. Even if I don't feel like any is in there I still pump down the old ice box and reclaim the refrigerant remaining. When I have 0 pressure on the gauge I pull a good vacuum  till I get as close to -30 as possible. Then I shut it down and watch it for a few hours to see if it loses vacuum. If it holds I recharge. I think most folks don't take the time to do it right.

Think about it. R12 is VERY expensive. I have a dedicated tank just for it. Beats having to buy some. I have a tank for 22 also.It not only is the law to recover it but it is practical to do so from an economic stand point.

Thank you icehouse the links you provide were helpful. I agree with your method & taking the time to clear the system correctly and evacuating is it
very important that hold that vacuum for at least 30mins. JW the 30lbs was $220. I will also recover the R12 and reuse it but up to this point I have
avoided it and sent those jobs to someone else but I can't aviod it any longer because I'm the last guy. There are alot of these R12 animals out here in the stix.  I was an inspector when all this stuff started getting phased out, didn't figure I would have to worry with the R12 now being its been gone for 12 yrs WRONG. Oh, Well

Hot shot is a zeotrope blend developed to to retrofit in R-12/MO based refrigeration systems. It is made mostly from R-22 and a mix of R-600, R-124, R-142. Think about this because ,what is happening on 2010?

Earl I assure you there is no black magic to doing R-134 retrofits or any retrofit for that matter. The question to proceed or not is usually a matter of economics and profit. I have done many changeovers with different refrigerants and temps.
