That may be an important clue to check the resistance of the Thermister. The electronic control monitors everything connected to it. Please read the service manual on how to check the thermister and the heating element with your OHM meter. The values of each are provided there.

The console is dead except when I push Cancel, "2" displays and it sounds like a drain cycle fisnishes and then the washer shuts off.  The thermostat is only $16, unfortunately a new  heating element is @$65.  Does the whole pump assembly need to be lifted to test/replace the thermostat?

I was able to run a (short cycle) "26" (minutes?) through the dishwasher.  It got to "6" on the display and sensing and heating lights were on.  It ran  without droppping below 6 for quite a while and then quit, and the Quick Rinse light began to blink. In this state the uttons are unresponsive. While it was in this cycle the element was heating (very hot to the touch).

If your heater element is getting hot the element and thermostat are likely  OK. The problem likely lies with the "thermistor" Which is basically the temperature sensor. You have to pull the dishwasher out to check this part. As repairman said read the service manual and measure with an OHM meter and remember this parts resistance changes depending on the temperature so consult the manual.

In looking at the manual, I can't find any mention of the Thermistor.  I see the Operating Thermostat. I also see Hi-Limit Thermostat.  In the trouble shooting section it mentions a thermal fuse, but I can't find that on the illustrations in the manual.

Some of these models have thermistors. In the absence of a thermistor they use the operating thermostat.
All this is explained in the manual.
