Whirlpool Washer agitates and spins when it wants to!
« on: December 10, 2007, 06:08:30 PM »
I have a whirlpool LXR7144EQ1, and it agitates and spins sometimes, and other times it dosen't. When the washer goes from the fill into agitate sometimes I get a slight humming and a smell of something overheating, then I hear a click (I'm assuming a thermal breaker) and the wahser stops. If I wait a little while it may or may not agitate, I've checked the lid switch, ohmed the motor out and inspected the coupler. A few months ago I had to replace the pump due to a leak (thanks for the pics) and I had to clean quite a bit of rust from the motor shaft, maybe a bad bearing or something?

After a few days of arguing with the machine, to no avail, I decided to use it again. It worked, until it ran through the agitate cycle. Then like before it just stopped, wouldn't drain and unlike times before wouldn't come back on when I let it cool down. My wife has been pleading for me to just give up on it, though I just can't make myself. It has become a mission to me, I must find out what has driven this machine, and myself mad.

Hi,

Sorry for the late reply. I seem to have missed this one when you first posted.

When you replaced the water pump how did the motor shaft look?

Sometime if the water pumps have been leaking for some time water will run up the motor shaft and raise hell with the motor.

If this is the case the water pumps are often hard to get off as the motor shaft is all rusted up.

It does sound like your motor is kicking out on the built in over load.

Hope you find our site helpful.

Rusty, there was quite a bit of cleaning to be done, and I did lubricate the motor in order for it to spin more freely. However, the pump really wasn't all that hard to remove.

If you have power to the motor but it will not run then you will need to replace the motor.

You could also remove the pump from the motor. Remove the motor from the transmission and run just the motor to see if it still gets hot and cuts out durning the agitation cycle.

If the motor still gets hot and cuts out without being connected to anything then you have a bad motor.

Here is the motor for the LXR7144EQ1 washer.

How old is the washer?

Not sure how old it is, I bought it from a buddy of mine. Thanks, I'll try that this weekend and see what I can come up with. Have you seen a motor test good with the ohm meter and then turn out to be bad?

You may want to also check for bad connections on the motor plug.

A bad connection would make the motor not run, but would not make it get hot and cut out.

Just something else that is quick and easy to check while your looking at the motor again.

Thanks!
I'll check that too, although nothing appeared to be loose the first few times I checked it. I wiggled them all and everything appeared tight and secure.

Okay so after my wife pleaded with me again, I replaced this machine. I went with a Whirlpool Duet HT. She seems to like it and from posts which I read here it seems to be a good choice. However, now more than ever I am on a mission to repair the old machine. So as not to hear "I told you so" from the wife.
Can I test the motor function with the water lines disconnected? Or should I run them to the water hose or something like that. I'm sure that now the new machine is in place, she isn't going to let me move it. Not to mention that sucker is heavy!

The Whirlpool Duet HT is a awesome washer.
It would be great if you or even your wife would post a review of the washer after you get a chance to use it some.

To run the motor during the agitate cycle without water you would have to fool the water level switch into thinking the washer was full of water.

It may just be easier to fill it full of water.

I think your really going to like that new Duet washer and I would love to hear your thought on it after you have used it some.

Sure, we would be happy to give a review. Maybe it's just the excitement of the new washer but she's glowing over it.
Tomorrow I will fill it with water and do the motor test on the old machine. I'll post it, and go from there.
Thanks for all the help!

I filled the tub with my water hose and then sent the washer into agitation, to which it worked fine. Then I advanced it and let it drain then spin, all fine. So, I then connected the water hose to the inlet on the rear of the washer. It filled fine just as before, and then when it became time to agitate, the brakes were put on. No agitate, and even after I let the tub drain out and advanced the timer, no spin. I took a video of it but it is too large to attach it. Any suggestions?
