70 Series top loader won't spin under load
« on: February 09, 2009, 09:50:01 AM »
My 70 series will not spin under load.  I've taken it completely apart and there are no obviously broken components.  With no clothes in the washer everything works great.  Add just about any size load and it cannot spin the clothes.

During the spin cycle (with clothes only) the tub actually turns counter clockwise as if in agitation mode.  With power and pump off you can put vise grips on motor shaft and spin by hand and everything seems to be functioning.  Counter clockwise brake shoes engage and it agitates only.  Clockwise brake shoes release and the basket spins.

Direct drive and coupler appears to be fine.  I'm lost at this point.  Please help.

Sounds like you need a new clutch.

Got a  new clutch kit from Sears today.  Is there a link anywhere to proper installation instructions?

Thanks!

But, of course!

Clutch Replacement

Actually the instructions are in the 285785 package, if that's the kit you got. tsk tsk on using Sears...bad juju... To be fair, however, no one pointed you toward the part as they should have

Nothing to it. Remove the tranny. get a big pair of pliers and squeeze the spring. The liner comes right out. OR just remove the washer then the U clip then the retainer and lift the entire dude off the tranny, nothing is hard about repairing this washer.

Fairly easy job.  Only challenge was getting the sort of S shaped clip on when replacing the clutch drum.

Unfortunately the new clutch did not fix the problem.  Still works perfect at every stage except spin.  When it tries to spin the basket actually turns in the opposite direction it should (should turn clockwise but instead turns slowly counter clockwise) and actually seems to still agitate.  Take the clothes out and everything works great.

Any other ideas on what might be wrong? :bonk:

Sounds to me like you have shift actuator and or cam damage inside the transmission.
Your gears are not locking in with a load in the washer.
The agitate and spin is symbolic of this problem.
New tranny time.

Didn't know you sold parts here.  Now I understand the Sears comment.  :2funny:

Unfortunately, at that price I think it may be better just to go with a new washing machine.  Though its been a good one, the 70 sears has a lot of years on it.

Thanks for your help.

We don't sell parts ourself, but we work with AppliancePartsPros.comicon and RepairClinic.com who both sell appliance parts.

If you would use the "Search by Model Number" box at the left side of this site it would display parts from AppliancePartsPros.com

Also if you would use the "Search by Part Number" it will display parts from RepairClinic.com

We get a little kick back from both AppliancePartsPros and RepairClinic when you buy parts from them though our site, but we (ApplianceJunk.com) do not directly sell parts ourself.

The little bit we make from affiliate parts sales helps pay for server cost and a few other things it takes to keep this site running so it's appreciated when you buy parts through our site and not from Sears.  O0

That being said our main goal at ApplianceJunk.com is to help the consumer repair there own appliance and not parts sales.

Hope you find our site helpful.

You guys are very helpful.

If I wanted to take a shot at trying to rebuild my transmission do your parts allies sell individual transmission components?

Also, is there somewhere I can find a diagram of my Kenmore's tranny and how each component operates?

Furthermore, I saw a rebuilt tranny on ebay for around $60 plus $20 shipping.  Could I DIY for less or close to the same cost.  Part of this is just the challenge and wanting to figure out exactly what is wrong with the dumb thing.  For some stupid reason I just can't give up on it.

You should find a diagram attached to the bottom of this reply.

You may also find something helpful here.

I have never rebuilt one myself. Someone else will have to answer this one for you. :)

Wow that diagram and photo shoot look intimidating.   :'(

For the diagram is there anything that tells what each numbered item is called?
