GE REFRIGERATOR COOLING PROBLEM

Hello,

Trying to troubleshoot the cooling problem on a GE refrigerator. The freezer cools to ~ 32' & the refrig ~40' I took the back panel off inside the freezer. There was some frost on a few of the coils. The condenser coils below the refrigerator have been cleaned.

If there is frost on just 2 or 3 rows then it is low on gas. There should be frost from bottom to top. Today's models that use R134a tend to get a tad low. They only hold a small amount to begin with. More than 1/3rd of a 12 ounce can would choke down the compressor. If you have no guages a good way to guess if you have enough is to slowly add in some freon till all the coils are frosted. If the compressor ear frosts over you have too much in there. Add the freon slowly.

Check your condenser fan motor. Make sure it is running and the condenser coils are clean.

You have a quite old R-12 system.

Thank you for the recommended checks. The condenser fan is running & the condenser coils are clean. The far right side of the coils behind the freezer panel where frosted over. Less than 20% coverage.

Given the age of this refrigerator, it is time to go shopping.
You have either a refrigerant leak or a worn out compressor.

I would put some R134a anyway if it was mine.
