I have 1 of the last MAYTAG built Maytag neptunes & running strong for 4 years. 2 loads a day. I have not done anything to it & use white vinegar once a month & no problems! Sure they had problems but compared to working on the Korean stuff they were great.

TOSG,
Vinegar will not clean your machine. The only way to clean your machine is detergent and heat. Lots of it. Trust me on this - we've had nothing but front loaders for the last 40 years ('cos we have teeny weeny little houses in the UK (apart from HRH The Queen, who is allowed several large ones)), so machines have to go under worktops.

MY grandmother used white vinegar instead of bleach in underwear & socks. Worked very well, also I have used it in customers dishwashers & washers (both top & front load) & does a very good job of breaking down soap deposits, calcium deposits & such. No harmful left over chemicals to get into your clothing or on dishes. Remember in USA we don't heat the water like European washing machines do. We run hot & cold water to the washers & are 110 volt compared to only cold water & 220 volt (which is smarter) I did a lot of ASKO & other European washers years ago.

THIS ARTICLE from UKWHITEGOODS and the links in it are pretty well definitive as to what is going on inside a front loader.

I was aware that top loaders used mixed fill to achieve wash temperature - surely your front loaders must have heaters?

Most are to boost the temperature of the hot water brought into the machine.

Only on some washers, and usually only during the "sanitary" Wash Cycle.

I'm not going to mention what my grandmother did with white vinegar...
