front load washers
« on: January 25, 2009, 08:34:27 PM »
What are the pros and cons (besides the cost) of front load washers VS. top load washers? Are they that much better?

Half the water and electricity usage than a top loader

Plus the clothes come out of the front loads way dryer which means shorter drying times where most of the electricity is used in doing laundry.

My sister has one (I don't know what brand) and the detergent is always gumming up the works.  The repair guy said it's VERY common in front loaders, regardless what kind you use.

You have to use HE soap in them and give them a shot of affresh once a month.

Correct dosage is essential - you need a lot less than in a top loader. Crucial to find out your water hardness as well - soft water requires lower dosage.

Affresh is pretty amazing stuff if you've got a really gunked up machine - otherwise a "service wash" - 90/95c and detergent - will suffice.

The reduction of the number of mechanical components which can break is partly offset by the use of electronic control - pcb prices can make your hair curl.

We've had a Whirlpool Duet HT for about a year now, and I can't complain about it. You don't even have to use the soap mfg. suggested amount and the clothes still come out clean. Affresh monthly helps too. Leave you door open when not in use, and if possible remove the soap/fabric softener tray. There is a lot of moisture that doesn't dry out if you don't remove it. I haven't experienced it, but my neighbor's machine is funky!
