First problem was always no matter how laundry was adjusted machine would go out of balance and dance around the floor. Now it won't even spin after rinse cycle. I hear a hum and I can smell the what I think is the coil burning. Also there was what seemed to be black soot in the drum.
Are the bearings seized?

Your spin bearing is highly suspect.

Remove the belt from the motor and set to spin. See if the motor runs.

Make sure there is no pump obstruction.
