GE side by side ice maker problem....
« on: January 14, 2009, 07:50:59 AM »
Half size cubes, a bit hollow in middle, plus it makes a loud buzzing noise most of the time. Is it probably the valve at the bottom in the back of the fridge? Looked yesterday and there are two of them built into an assembly, should I replace both?... Thanks for any help... BTW, repair shop wanted $70.00 for both, that sound right?

Try a new water filter instead. Can't help you much without the correct model number, sorry.

Thx repair man... will have model number tomorrow. Water comes out fine from the dispenser in the door, could it still be a filter problem? It has been a long while since I changed it...

Check the incoming water tube to the ice maker inside the freezer. The GE SxS is prone to freeze the water in the line resulting in smaller cubes and eventually no cubes.

Jumptrout, you'll need to limit your interjections on my posts if you please.Too many cooks will spoil the broth. I will get to GE problems if I see fit later.

Yes, liz, the filter should be changed every 6 months. Indications of a clogged filter are sub-sized or hollow ice cubes. Certainly try a new filter before assuming somthing worse is wrong.

I apologize Repair-man.
After you told Liz you could not help her without a model number, I felt I could help her with an obvious problem I run into 8-10 times a month.

Probably needs a new water valve. The twin valves on this puppy have seperate functions in other words work on diff parts of the ice box. One side does the water in the door thang. The other side works the Ice maker. Shelling ice cubes is caused by harvest cycle being triggered prematurely due to poor asz water fill. The filter may be plugged but I doubt it.

Thanks for all the help guys.... really appreciated. MODEL NUMBER: TFX22ZPBE-BB. Instead of spending $45.00 on a new filter to see if this fixes the problem, could I pull the filter out and put in the plug to bypass the filter to see if this works? If I pull the filter and the ice maker works properly it would tell me it is just a clogged filter, right?

Your model requires the use of a filter by-pass plug to operate without a filter.

Yes, you must use it.
