Whirlpool Toploading Washer won't stop filling up
« on: January 13, 2009, 07:26:08 PM »
Model Number: LSB6400KQ1

I set my clothes to wash, went to lunch, and came home to a flood.  I looked in the machine and it was still full of water, but there was still water coming slowly in.  I held the door closed (put my finger on the button) and set it to spin so that the water would drain out.  I saw that water was still coming into the drum, so I shut the faucet off behind the machine.  Once, the spin cycle was done and the machine was off, I tried turning the faucet back on and saw that the water was still coming in slowly.  Apparently, the machine is not telling the water to shut off.  It's not a full-on flow, however, but a dribble.  Is it the rubber gaskets on the hose?  Or is it an internal problem?  Could it be because there is lint inside, that might have plugged up a filter?  Any suggestions?  I had a repairman come out before and he took the back panel off and just cleaned out lint.  I don't remember why I called him that time, though.  Same problem???

Your water valve could be bad or just suffering from a low pressure leak because of a silt buildup in the water valve filter screen.
Turn your water off. Disconnect the water hoses. Look for silt inside the water valve opening. If present, clean it out and rehook water hoses.
If no silt is present, replace your water valve.

Yes, I had sand in there.  I cleaned out both the hot and cold and reconnected, but it's still filling.  I guess I have a bad one.  You gave me the part number.  I can't figure out how to get to it to change it.  Does the back open up?  None of Whirpool's manuals show how to get to that part.

It is really easy to replace this valve. No repairman needed.The trick is accessing the water valve which seems impossible unless you know the trick.Shut off the water and unplug the machine. Take the hoses loose. remove the control panel screws on either side on front and flip up the the panel. Pop the chassis clips in back and tip the case forward. You can now easily access the water valve.

This one shows a pic of the cab off the base and has a short movie. Once you have the case off it is easy enough to get the water valve off and replace it.

Similar to the person in this post, we have a Whirlpool YLSR7233EQ0 (16 years old) that has recently started behaving the same: water won't shut off.
The washer will successfully run through whatever cycle that is selected, but the water won't stop.  Cold or hot, doesn't matter.
We disassembled the washer/casing today to troubleshoot based on some information we've seen on the internet;
- cleaned silt out of cold water intake screen in back.
- checked the tube that controls the small/medium/large water level - it is connected, no blockage.
- and cleaned some 'gunk' from the tub and so on while we were in there.
We haven't resolved the problem but wondering if it might be electrical - the cycle selector button, when you push it in to STOP the cycle this usually stops the water but the water is continuing to run in.  Suggestions on parts or next steps?
Thanks!

  Unplug the washer, if water still comes in, the water inlet valve is faulty and needs replaced.
