whirlpool wont spin

Hi,

Nice forum!

I think my model number is 3954210 (stamped on the back of the top) and our washer has started acting up lately.. was very slow to spin and would barely get the water out of the clothes..

Last night it quit spinning completly.

Took the case off, looked at the coupler, all is fine there with no visable wear and is not stripping on the shafts.

Assembled the motor again, crossed the lid wires and plugged it in, empty washer and it would "turn" but almost at a crawl, maybe would spin about 5-10 times a minute at the speed it was turning..

Pulled the motor off again, manually tried to turn the transmission shaft and it wouldnt turn.. should I be able to turn that by hand as well?

I am thinking from what I have read that the tranny is gone.. I hope not, but what does everyone think?

update:

Rechecked everything, will spin but super slow as mentioned in the previous post and if I put my hand on top of the agitator, it will just stop.. and if the drum is still spinning, I can touch it lightly and it comes to a complete stop.

Sounds like you need a new clutch if it still sort of spins.

The clutch is fairly cheap you have to pull the transmission to do it the clutch sits on top. Remove agitator,pump, motor tip machine
 on side and block the tub up so you don't stretch the springs remove the 3 1/2" bolts holding the transmission and it should slide straight out.

I just replaced my clutch. it took about 45 minutes. It would have been faster but I had to take it apart again because the circlip on top of the clutch shot off after my first cylce.
