Whirlpool Gold Dryer control panel not working
« on: January 10, 2009, 03:01:40 AM »
My 4.5 year old Whirlpool dryer decided to call it quits. There is still light when I open the door, but nothing happens when I push the buttons. I cleaned in and around the air duct and the back of the dryer, but it's still not working.

Is it time for a new dryer? I will have my husband open the back of the dryer to check the fuse to see if that might the problem. Before I called a technician to come, I thought I'd ask to see if I could get some help on this forum.  Thanks in advance for your assistance.

Check the door switch continuity first. Then if it is OK, open the back of the dryer and check the thermal fuse for continuity.

I know this is an amateur question, but how do I check the door switch for continuity? And how do I check the thermal fuse for continuity? Do I need some sorty of special device? TIA.

Your drum light works off the same switch as the door switch. However, it does not mean the door switch itself is good.
JW displayed a picture of the thermal fuse. jump the thermal fuse wires together and start your dryer. If everything works OK, replace the thermal fuse.

I plugged it in and tried to jump the two wires, but nothing worked. I guess it's not the thermal fuse then. I pressed on the door switch and the light goes on and off just fine. Could it be something else?

With a volt meter verify 220-240 volts at the terminal where your cord connects.

Did you get an error code?
If so, which one?
Do any of your LED lights come on?

You are down to the display or the brain. They had a lot of trouble with this model and replaced a lot of the brains on them for free. We got one at the shop. You might want to check with whirlpool on that.

Press MORE TIME  then  LESS TIME 2 times each and see if you enter the test mode.
Did any lights come on after doing this?

I don't have a volt meter, so cannot perform the terminal test.

Based on your answers and without a meter to do the test, it seems your electronic control is bad.
With a meter and the knowledge to use it I could direct you through a few tests for confirmation.
