Maytag Neptune Dryer will not heat.

After the power came back on from Hurricane Ike our Maytag dryer has refused to heat.

As I am now on unemployment and the cost of a repairman would likely equal one weeks pay are there any things that I can check myself or replace myself to get it back on the road again.  We love this washer/dryer pair and their "stain brain" and this is the first problem we have had in 8 years.

If you have a meter, the first thing we do is verify 240 volts at the dryer cord. If the voltage is a true 240, then unplug the dryer and proceed thusly:


Expose the handy tech sheet inside the top console. There are 4 screws on the back edge to remove in order to pop the control panel upward and toward you at the same motion. It walks you thru the diagnostics, including the resistance values for all the parts.

Thank you for your encouragement.  We moved the dryer out and open the electrical access panel on the back and viola' the wire from the plug to the L1 connector was burned free....must have been a surge after the storm.

The storm had nothing to do with it. A poorly trained installer caused this problem by not tightening the terminals on the dryer cord tightly upon installation. The storm was merely coincidental and did not cause the  wire to burn.
