I'm trying to fix a Diplomat ADP3220 in-built oven. The inner ring of the top element isn't heating up so I originally thought it was the element (the existing one looked pretty old), but the same thing happened with the replacement.
I traced the cabling back to the temperature switch on the front of the oven, and found that the live contact for the inner ring of the element was dead. There was a spare way next to it (I think it's an 8-way switch in total) which was showing a voltage when switched on, so I connected the inner element wire to it and everything seems to be working fine now, but I don't know if each way is part of a simple on-off arrangement for the whole switch or something more complicated.
I hope that makes a bit of sense. My question is, is what I've done safe (I'm expecting it to be a temporary fix for a few weeks until I can get round to buying a new switch)?
Thanks in advance.
