When the motor was opened up, the shaft that spins the impeller was badly corroded after only 4 years in service. The bearing cage had corroded and broken into bits jamming the shaft and at first causing loud noises, then after about 1 week the motor just quit altogether.
Because no leakage ever occurred, and the rest of the motor was perfectly fine, it looks like the bearing seal did not leak and the corrosion was the result of galvanic action. This is not surprising as the impeller sits in the bottom of the sump which never completely drains. The engineers should have considered galvanic corrosion in the design for an appliance that ought to last at least 10 years.
To sum up, $110 and a couple hours work, and the loss of use of the appliance for a week waiting for the motor, all because of the corrosion of a 1/4" shaft and its small bearing. Anyone else seen this problem on similar or other models? I wonder if this was just a freak or a design flaw that should be fixed?
Thanks
