suddnly stopped cooling
« on: December 03, 2008, 08:42:51 PM »
My refrigerator suddenly stopped cooling. No warranty. I am a pretty decent do-it-yourselfer. does anyone have an idea where I should start?

Is the compressor running? If no unplug the unit and remove the start device from the compressor look for fry marks, shake it if it rattles it is bad and needs to be replaced. Another common problem this time of year is mice nesting and them little critters love to chew on wires.

I was guessing that, but I cannot find anything in the parts lists with that type of name. Does it go by some other name, or would I have to buy the whole condenser kit to get it?

Look at part #4 Overload/Relay the so called relay in that device is a ceramic thermister when they get to hot they shatter, that is the rattling sound you hear.

Click on the Maytag parts delivered in 1-2 days, enter your model # look at #4 on the diagram. You will notice it is out of stock, the last 1 of those I ordered took 6 weeks to get, but it was a good kit, it had 2 different devices in it with instructions on how to install the device that matched your compressor. I would go to the nearest Appliance parts house, 1st see if they stock the device you
need, if not get a 3-n-1 kit and use it until you can get the proper device.
Good luck.

I pulled it off, and it is solid, the fridge has been unplugged for a day and there seems to be alot of melting going on, but not an visible ice in the freezer. I put the part back on, and plugged it in and all started up. I fear that it might be something with the control board, or auto defrost? what might be next, or should I just call in the pros?

the cold control has to be cycled on & off three times in less than six seconds, and left in the on position to initiate defrost. I bet that adaptive defrost control is faulty. Try removing it and cleaning the contacts. re install it and retry.
