I have a Kenmore Model 596.58642890 which just quit working.  I can hear the relay start thing clicking, but compressor will not start or run.  I am wondering if this could have been caused by a lightning strike as we lost our irrigation system box and some irrigation water lines to lightning a week ago.

Replace the start relay. They lean towards inexpensive.
If not the relay your compressor could be fried.
If you have a volt/ohm meter you can check the 3 pins on the compressor C-S-R. Also check each pin to ground on the compressor dome or the refrigerant tubing.
No VOM do the start relay and hope for the best.
OR, call a qualified technician.
