Maytag Atlantis washer does not know warm
« on: November 21, 2008, 11:26:44 PM »
Our washer does not know warm. Have it run hot, and it is HOT. Have it on cold and it is COLD. Have it on warm and it is HOT.

When under warranty, a guy replaced the water temp switch. It seemed to help some, but it still was not quite right.

I can use a multi-meter. I have a diagram. I have torn the thing apart and know how to get at everything. But, I am not certain what I am looking for or what to test. I am guessing the the water valve is messed up, or a thermostat. I see on the diagram a temp control light, but I have NO idea where that light might be.

Can you help get me started?

Thanks!!

Model MAV9600EWW

Water temps on this machine are controlled bythe ATC board which is attached to the back of the timer. It is connected to the temperature thermister that is built into the water inlet valve. The board monitors the incoming water to adjust power to the water valve for warmer or colder temps. Remember that this is an Energy Star machine, so you do not have real control over the actual temps, the Government does.

Your User Guide has a complete list of the temperatures that are supposed to be in the tub with each setting, so review it before you decide there's really something wrong with the machine.  If you are convinced that the incoming water to the tub is not what it should be (measure with thermometer), then a new board or water valve would be the solution. The Altantis service manual here on the website  also provides the thermistar OHm readings so you can check the valve physically. Examine the 2 thermister leads on the water valve for signs of corrosion, which might lead to erratic temps. My experience has been a bad board.

Thanks for the suggestions. The pics are the correct items for this washer.

I forgot to mention that when you start the washer on warm, it actually comes out warm at first. Then, something in the automatic temperature control system goes haywire and it turns to FULL HOT.

In terms of using a thermometer: uhh, that is unnecessary. On the warm setting, it turns SCALDING hot. I know our water temps well enough to know that this is 100% hot water from the hot water tank. It is nowhere near the "luke-warm" temp that the manual states. The only exact temp given in the manual is for energy-saver hot, and it lists 90 degrees. This warm water is hotter than that!!

I will look for the online Atlantis service manual to check ohm readings. THANKS!

Uhh, the list of manuals does not include an Atlantis, or have my model number. Were you thinking of a different site?

Maybe the forum manager will add it to the site. For other people, I found one that seems a little outdated, but appears like it will work for my unit. Here is a direct link to the manual. http://www.cagrimmett.com/justanswer/Maytagatl.pdf

More than likely, your configuration looks like the pic below. In which case, it pays to check the thermostats associated with the water valve. See the tech sheet inside the console. Here is a helpful manual if you have PowerPoint:Atlantis III Manual

Okay, using the outdated manual, the schematic in the machine, and a little brain power to figure out which wires were at which terminal, I found that the thermist-thingy (the temperature reading resistor on the water valves) was not changing AT ALL. I in fact cleaned the terminals, noticing that the one painted blue was on the hot water side and the red was on the cold side. I doubt that mattered, but I cleaned the corrosion and IT WORKS again. Next time, I will cut the wires and solder new connectors, for that is where most the corrosion is.

THANKS everyone!

here's a Maytag Service Bulletin that mentions corrosion on the Thermistor on the older models... MAV9557 ...
