So we have to unscrew the top of the washer to get the top off. Correct?

Ma'am, what part of that manual have you not read yet? 


Taking the whole thing apart is all covered. The part you need to take off does not require any tools, and the tub does not have to be disturbed. It has a simple lid on it you can remove. How about dropping back by after ya'll have done some reading & looking?

Sorry for the inconvience. My husband did read it last night. What he understood is you had to remove the agitator arm and such.  I guess we will figure it out. Thanks for your help.

I will give you one tip about the Amana agitator that'll blow your socks off. I take off my leather belt, slide it under the agitator bottom till it's in the middle, then I turn my face away and pull up sharply on both ends of the belt to remove the agitator. Works every time.

You would only need to remove the agitator if you had to take out the inner tub. Otherwise you can get to any debris from the top without moving anything but the cover.
