washer will not agitate

have a 4 year old whirlpool washer. filled then would not agitate and I cannot get it to do anything

You must shut the lid before it goes right? Well the lid switch breaks on these washers.  The lid must be closed for spin (or wash in some models). The lid has a striker in it that pushes against the lidswitch arm. This switch allows for spin IF the lid is closed. The switch may have failed. Mechanically the striker may be broken or the actuator arm may be broken.
