GE Gas Range: Oven blows fuse as soon as we turn it on

Our GE gas range is about 14 years old.

The broiler and stove top work fine.
The oven blows a fuse as soon as we turn it on.

Any ideas on what is wrong?
Can we fix ourselves?

Could be a shorted bake ignitor...you'd need an OHM meter to see...


The ignitor and the oven gas valve are the only 2 things on the circuit. This goes for the Broil side as well. The gas valve has dual coils for Bake and Broil. One could be OK, the other bad. It boils down to a short in the gas valve or the ignitor. Simple.

If it is the ignitor, is this a part we can buy and replace ourselves, or do we need to call a repairman?

Or do we just start looking for a new stove, based on the age of this stove?

If I were you, I would pull out the stove and perhaps take off whatever back panel is on there so you can look at the wiring from the bake ignitor and the valve. Could be something burned or shorted causing the problem. In either case, buying a new stove is sort of ridiculous for a $40 part. (Unless that is your motive to begin with)

Have a look at my handy little file on Gas Range Servicing to get an idea of whats down there. I realize it's a Whirlpool manual, but gas ranges are universal in makeup.
