Frigidaire Over the Range Microwave
« on: November 03, 2008, 01:08:18 AM »
I have a 4 year old Frigidaire Electrolux Over the Range Microwave that keeps shutting off a few seconds after starting.  The display starts to flicker slightly and then it shuts off.  The only way to get it to operate is to reset the clock.  After 3 or 4 times resetting the clock it will stay running.  Everything else works perfectly.  Haven't had any power fluctuations.  Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

There is a safety thermostat on the magnetron that will interrupt power to the control board if high temps are reached or an overload occurs. Chances are the problem is more serious, since this is a safety measure to prevent a fire.

Unless you have personal ties to this unit, find a new one at Home Depot or someplace and replace it. A bad mag tube will cost more than this one is worth.

The part won't be the cost it will be the labor. You can replace it yourself.
To check the mag you need a ohm meter. The 2 legs of course need to have continuity and if either leg is shorted to chassis then the mag is bad. Check the mag tower for a burned mark. This is a sure sign of a bad mag.

Thanks for the reply.  How much trouble is it to get to the mag?  Sounds like the whole cabinet needs to be opened up.  Is this dangerous?

Actually, I do have personal ties to this unit.  I paid $358 for it, has been used very little and it's also my range hood.  I don't consider it a throw away.  I will have to pay a technician to either fix this one or install a new one.  Which do you think would be cheaper?  Thanks for your opinion.

If your warranty states that the magnetron is covered for 5 years, then you have some leverage. You will only pay for the labor. That's between you and whoever you call to come out, as prices vary. The actual cost of the magnetron is around $130, and I am speculating that you will pay at least $100 to have it installed.

If all the safetys and the mag seem to be ok then look for a black fuse like the one shown way away from the rest of the controls hidden on the opposite side of the oven.

The magnetron has a ten year warranty, so I'll start there.  Thanks for the assistance.

I think it is Part Number: 5304434314. The outer glass is frosted.  Screen and inner glass fine.  So, need to replace the screen/glass insert, or the entire door.  Not sure yet how to pop the insert out of the door.  Do have door off the hinges.  New door is way to expensive.

To Ghostdog,

Yes, I was able to fix my Frigidaire Microwave.  The magnetron had a 10 year warranty so there was no charge.  The local repairman made two trips to fix it, but the labor was less than $100, so it was definately worth fixing.  Thanks for the inquiry.
