Whirlpool Washer Agitates, but no Spin
« on: November 01, 2008, 09:23:34 PM »
Got home from my kids soccer game today, threw their uniforms in the washer.  When I went back to get the clothes out, they were soaked.  After fidgeting with the machine for a while.  (Took of the cover).  I realized that the agitator was working, but the tub was not spinning.  The tub did drain completely.

I read a few posts about the motor coupling, but if it was the coupling wouldn't it also affect the agitator?  Thanks in avance for your help.

OK.  took the thing apart.  Coupler is Good.  When I turn the shaft at the coupler by hand, I can get the tub to turn.

I put the thing together, bypassed the lid, and placed the machine on spin.  Both the tub and the agitator turned.  I put a wet t-shirt in the tub and the tub stopped turning.

Clutch?  Tranny?

the clutch is a piece of cake to replace. You just slide out the agitator( the tub stays put, the tranny comes out the bottom) then remove the motor then get the 3 bolts out and the tranny and clutch justs pops right out. The clutch is held on by a spring clip on top the tranny. If that don't fix it you can go deep into the tranny and look under the main gear for a smashed spin pawl.I have seen the main drive gear ( which is plastic ) smooth as a baby's butt so look at that too. The guy I repaired that washer for had 12 kids and his wife stayed in the laundry room. This is pretty easy to fix. Ain't nothing hard to fix on this washer. It is worth fixing because of that reason by itself.
