Whirlpool Washer Will Not Agitate
« on: October 28, 2008, 08:55:49 AM »
Model Number: LA5500XTW0 icon

I have a fairly old Whirpool washer, I'm assuming, manufactured in 1988 or so by the model number. It is direct drive and will not agitate. It goes through all the cycles and just fine, just doesn't move the clothes around when it's in the wash cycle. I ordered an agitator repair kit, but haven't installed it yet. I did remove the agitator from the basin and the splines are perfect. I didn't notice that any of the agitator dogs were broken. Could there be another problem with either the motor coupling or the transmission? It's not making any noises, as far as the transmission is concerned. I was just wondering if the motor coupling is worn enough, that it won't agitate properly, but still allows for the spin cycle to work? As I said, it spins fine, just no agitation.

Thanks for your help!

Look closely at them dogs. The face of them will be smooth. Know why? Because they is wore slap out amigo. In the pic below see the dog on the left? See the ridges. You needs dem ridges fer the dogs to catch the grooves on the top portion so they will advance the clothes downward and thus circulate them for better washing. :D

Thank you for your response. That's all that it was, the teeth on radial end of the dogs were completely gone so there was nothing for them to catch on. Appreciate your forum very much, Thank You!
