I came home to my wife explaining that she was trying to do a load of laundry and she came down to see it stopped and flashing F.  She had fiddled with it quite a bit, power off/on the washer and unplugging/plugging it in.  It is now in a state where the front panel has lights and displays but does not respond until I unplug it and plug it back in.  At that point, I can select different cycles and all other buttons respond.  Once I hold down the start button it locks the door and makes a single clicking noise which I am assuming is the beginning of the process where it calls for water, however, it does not fill.  I have checked the water source and the filters are free of debris.  It will sit there and do nothing.  When I hit the stop button it makes another beep and acts like it has stopped the cycle with the minutes flashing.  I hit it again and the minutes stop flashing.  Then the entire control panel seems to lock up and I am unable to get the door open.  I have to actually pull the door release by removing the front bottom panel.  There are no more f-codes whatsoever.  I'm thinking it could be the control panel as it seems to simply stop responding after playing with it and I also cannot seem to get the diagnostic program to launch.  I put it on the "rinse and drain" cycle as the manual says and hit the "2nd rinse" button 4 times in under 5 seconds and it simply toggles back and fourth between 25 and 15 min.  The diagnostics never launch.  I thank anyone in advance for any help offered.

This machine is in essence a Whirlpool Duet.
You are describing what sounds like a failed control.

This is called a microcomputer also. It is probably not the control panel User Interface, as you can still program the buttons, the microcomputer in back follows the commands, but obviously is not doing its job.
