Kenmore Washer Replaced Motor Coupling Now What? Help pls

Kenmore Washer wouldnt spin or agitate, replaced motor coupling, no problem, ran fine thru test cycle, agitated and spun, ran second cycle, didnt agitate, filled with water and wouldnt drain, bailed it out, pulled motor again, coupling was ok, took lid switch and hooked it back up to the harness and put washer into cycle, fills, but wouldnt agitate, hooked pump back to it and it pumped out water, but wouldnt spin, motor is getting extremely hot and cutting off. Once it cools, and you hold the lid switch, the motor tries to turn, but very slow, if you help it by hand, it will take off and go intermittently. Gonna borrow ohm meter tomorrow to test motor I guess, but any ideas out there,,,, please help!

Check the 2 wires going to the black capacitor on the motor. Perhaps you jostled one loose during the coupling procedure.

wires going to the start cap are fine, I had actually labeled them when I removed them, they are on good and snug... Could cap be bad? Thninkin it is the motor..

Asking if something could be "bad" is sorta speculating, isn't it? How would I know without testing it?


Tell ya what, since you plan on obtaining a volt/ohm meter soon, all you need to do is follow the test procedures outlined in the  Service Manual Guide here.

This manual covers both belt and direct drive machines, so read the topics that pertain to your machine to find out if it's the motor or timer. If I had to make an educated guess, it would likely be the motor.

How does the Motor run (slow, HOT ?) with it disconnected from the Transmission ?

Motor is sitting on the floor and runs SLOW and HOT    very HOT

Sounds like a bad Motor (although a bad contact in the Timer may cause some Motor problems)

There's also a Centrifugal Switch ($ 70) on the Motor ($ 160, Switch included) that switches from the Start Winding to the Run Winding, that is available separately.

Can you turn the Motor shaft freely ?

Get the motor coupler off and re-install it without binding up the motor and tranny. The end pieces need to be flush. Anything beyond flush is binding.
