Your washer has a transmission with a neutral pack in it. That means the neutral pack allow for the water pump to do its thang and pump the water out without spinning. The washer timer will allow for the pump to clear the water out of the tub and come to a screaming halt. When the washer stops the neutral pack shifts the tranny into the spin mode. When you opened the lid you cause the washer to stop and when you lowered it the washer started spinning well anyway it should have started spinning instead it makes a noise and don't spin? Well if that's the case then that there coupling is probabaly broken.

No, I said that when I opened the lid it made a clunk sound, then when I close the lid it starts to spin.  It does spin it just doesn't do it automatically, I have to open and close the lid for it to start the spin cycle.

The clunk noise is the sound of the brake branging the tub to a screeching halt so you won't reach in and grab a dashiki while it is spinning wildly and have it wring yer arm off Kimosabe.  O0

The clunk

The clunk was the sound of me banging my head against this desk...didn't think you could hear it from there :)
