Maytag Dryer Squeaking like crazy
« on: October 11, 2008, 05:57:20 PM »
My Maytag Dryer MDE4000AYW is squeaking on and off, high pitch and low pitch.
It's driving me nuts!
Any suggestions.

Thanks
John

also check the slides/glides. If they look heavily worn or worst yet scraping metal to metal replace them.

Please tell me mote about "breaking down" the dryer, am I going into the back? or the side?
Is there a diagram that shows where to lube?
What kind of lube?
Also will I be able to see the slides?, and where can I buy them?

Thanks
John

What you do is remove the front shroud first. It kinda resembles a goal post. Grab it about 4 inchs below the top on each side of the door and yank it off. Then you will find some hold down clips you need to take loose and then the top will come up and you can get to the rest of the dryer.Seems to me you gotta remove the door too. It has been a long time since I fooled with one. You basically work everything from the front of this dryer. The squeel is gonna be them glides that mount on the front of the drum. Easy fix.

I use high temp resistant non flammable turbine oil. Zoom spout oil is the slipperyest stuff known to mankind. It is heat resistant, slow to evaporate and has been scientifically proven by Tazmanian devils everywhere. It's pretty good stuff.  :2funny::D

Yes, and there's lint in a heat-producing environment...what'sthe point?

You'll find that the right rear roller (the one over the heater) is bad. You'll know this by the little pile of rusty dust found under the roller. You'll also likely find the wrong kind of vent duct on back of your dryer. Maytags can't be vented with foil or plastic unless you  like replacing parts later due to  overheating.

I had a squeal develop after changing out the heating element. I checked all the bearings, rollers, glides, etc., and couldn't figure out what the deal was. Then I finally noticed that there were a few screws I had removed from the back of the dryer that secured the frame holding the rollers. The squeal was quite a chilling metal on metal sound. Your squeal could be a number of things. A few screws falling out would cause this as well.
