Whirpool Washer Won't spin

My Whirlpool washer, now about 9 years old, has suddenly stopped spinning. When it's time for the spin cycle it makes a loud buzzing and clicking sound like the drum is off or something along those lines. It continues to buzz for the entire time the cycle is set and stops when I move it to a non-spin cycle.

Where should I begin to look for this? Changing the thermostat in my matching dryer was a breeze because of this site but this sounds more involved.

I don't see a model number though there is a part number printed on the back of the control panel that I listed above.

Thanks. That seems to have done it. The hardest part of the repair was getting the cover back on the washer!

Would this still be the case if the Agitate function works (although it IS quite noisy when it does)?

Well, here we are 2 1/2 years later and the washer is dead again. This time it does not appear to be the drive gear that was replaced last time. Now, the cycle will run and with the tank full, after some agitation, the washer will sit there (on some test loads it may spin but generally it won't). There's an acrid burning smell coming from the washer along with some mild smoke.


Where do I start to look for this?
