Washer leaving dark spots

My wife just basically lost an entire load of new work outfits because our 2004 kenmore top loading washing machine covered everything with dark spots. Over the past few years every now and then we would see spots on a shirt or pair of pants here or there but very spotty. It seems we will go for weeks even months and everything is fine and then WHAM a load get messed up. I have read about belts, gaskets, transmission etc - anyone know anything about the kenmore top loaders of this year (sorry don't have model I'm in the office).

Kenmoore does not actually make machines they sub out to many different companies then put there name on it so the model # is important for the first three numbers will tell us who made the machine.

Are the marks oily or appear dirty?  It's common for top-load washer to harbour alot of nasty stuff in the tub that you can't see without removing the basket.  Also looking in the cabinet will tell alot if you see oil splattered around the interior you are looking at possible transmission...sometimes you can get away with a tub seal kit to keep you going though.

Thanks for the response - the Kenmore model number is 110.24952300 - last night we ran a hot load with a gal of bleech followed by a hot load with white vinigar then a hot load to rinse - this was suggested on another web site in an attempt to clean the washer - with the model number do you have any other ideas?

Your transmission has a solid shaft coming up out of it so that can't be the probo. Must be a blown shaft seal. Very rare indeed.
