Dryer does not start and emits a low humming noise.

Hi, Has anyone had this problem before. I have gotten advice that says the problem could be my timer or a bad motor or thermal limiter as well as a thermostat. I thought that somebody out there might be able to guide me. This dyer is only about 3-4 years old.

You may have a problem with your drum glides. Reach inside the dryer and try to turn the drum. It should be VERY EASY to turn it by hand. If it feels stiff then your glides are worn out. Inspect the glides> Start by using a putty knofe and do this:

After removing those screws that hold the front on. take a look at the glides. The part in her right hand is the new part. It mounts on top of the dryer door top inner rim. If you look close all of them glides are gone and the drum was just riding on the felt and pinching.This was causing the motor to get hot and hum.

the dryer is fixed...for now. the guides looked fine. i removed the top and turned the switch on to see where the humming was coming from. as i was doing this i tried to spin the drum while the switch was turned on and the drum rotated and then started going under its own power. is this a sign that the motor is going bad?

Well if everything else is ok then yes your motor is probably going out.
