Washer drains out while filling

A few weeeks ago the washer got stuck in rinse cycle, continually filling but never starting because the water was draing at the same time. I moved it over to spin, and the problem didnt happen again until day before yesterday.  This time, I just shook the tub around (it was a large load with blankets), and it started filling up and rinsed fine.  I was able to do 2 more loads of laundry before it completely gave up on me. Now I've tried every load size, spinning, shaking, asking nicely, and kicking.  The washer refuses to hold the water.  I looked up info online and tried taking the back off.....all the parts are underneath.  So we tilted it back and I dont have a clue what I'm looking at.  My roomate wanted to replace the sylenoid, with one from another washer in the garage, but I dont think thats the problem.  We have 9 people here and alot of laundry!  Please help!!!

Just raise your drain hose up. Gravity will syphon the water right out of the washer if: the drain hose is too low OR the drain hose is ducttaped or jammed in the drain in a way that will cause a natural syphoning effect.In the case of the latter you can install a drain anti-syphoning device for a few bucks to stop the problem.
