Maytag Dryer Buzzes & won't start

Went to start the dryer; when I pressed the start button, it buzzed (the end of cycle "buzz").  I tried starting it on different cycles, and it still buzzed.  In fact, as long as I held down the start button, it buzzed.  Hubby took panel off to check things out.  Appears that drum spins, belt is fine...any suggestions?  Oh, initially I also smelled "hot wire" smell..not fire or smoke though.  I'm guessing this is not good!!! LOL.

By "not good", do you mean a bad motor? Even if this turns out to be a motor, it's still cheaper than replacing a dryer! ($100 for part #303358)


It would not hurt to have your husband remove the back plate where the power cord is connected and look to see that none of the wires there are burned. Sometimes a loose connection can cause similar symptoms to the one you describe, but if it appears OK, the motor is bad.

There are manuals available for the older dryers to help with the repair, and repair it you should, since Maytag ain't making the same quality stuff as this one any more!

It looks to me like there's a bad Contact in the Timer.

You may be able to open it and take a look.
