Master Technician - Certified Appliance Professional

I am not usually one to toot my own horn, but I was rather pleased to find my M-CAP certificate in the mail this weekend. As a technician and trainer, I constantly work to keep abreast of changes in the industry and strive to maintain a high level of technical competence so I can provide good service to customers, and provide real value to those individuals I help train to one day become technicians. That is why after years of work experience, I decided to commit myself to passing one of the two industry sanctioned certification tests and demonstrate my abilities to my peer group.

Brian A. Dawson is among a very select group of major appliance service technicians in the United States to be certified as a Certified Appliance Professional with a Master Technician rating.

To achieve this status, Mr. Dawson has taken and passed eight different comprehensive examinations, that measure the individuals skills in consumer relations, diagnostic techniques and repair ability for all types of domestic major appliances.

The Master Technician rating is the highest available level of recognition for technical expertise given by the major home appliance industry.

Diagnosing and repairing today's sophisticated appliances requires special skill and constant training to keep abreast of changing technologies. Technicians that make the effort to maintain the high level of excellence necessary to become a Certified Appliance Professional are proud of their skills and deserve to be recognized by their profession.

Certification is strictly voluntary and only those who possess extraordinary skills in the field of appliance repair will attempt the rigorous testing procedure.

The Professional Service Association (PSA) is a not-for-profit National Trade Association representing independent appliance and electronic service centers. The Certification programs developed by PSA are designed to encourage excellence and pride in our industry.

Now that this test is behind me (for the next four years at least), I can set my sights on the NASTeC test, later this year. I will let you know how it all works out.

Did you take all eight examinations at once?
Did you have to travel to take these exams?

I didn't have to travel out of town, just needed to find a suitable proctor for the exam. I did take all 8 together otherwise the cost goes way up.  The entire thing took about 3 hours and there are 340+ questions (I lost count).  Glad it's done and on the record.  The NASTeC test I will need to travel for and it's format is a bit different, but the concept is about the same.  Once I take and pass that one, then I will apply to become a proctor because we currently have none in the Portland area.  Then I can proctor the exam out of our training center for current techs and students completing their trainings.

I would recommend Certificate training to anyone interested in Appliance Repair.  The new appliances have a lot more on the electronic side, and though many parts can be tested or diagnosed easily it's good to know some of the technical stuff.  Makes it easier to understand, a bit difficult at first but after some study it gets easier. Of course I don't have the intensive training you have but what  I have learned has helped quite a bit.  Good Job. That's something to be proud of.

  Way to go.The more you know the more you can pass on.
Here on Long Island the need is tremendous. I had Greg from Whirlpool
send a review to the "Vocational" High School and instead of incorporating
the program they turned it down stating they had no room for it.
40 years ago they had the program but let it drop. Go figure.
