Kitchenaid dishwasher does not fill with water

Our dishwasher does not fill with water.
Is there something simple I can do to get it working again?

Have a look in the tub and see that the float cup is free and not hung up. If it is stuck, the water valve will not work. You can also take the lower panel off and test the water valve with a meter for continuity.

I moved the float cup thing around inside and tried it again.
This time it worked!

I don't understand what happened. Is it a bad connection someplace that needs to be fixed?

Thanks!!

From time to time something gets on that float and makes it stick. It has a a micro-switch attached to a shaft on lots of these dishwashers. The shaft will be stuck in the up position and not allowing power to get to the water valve.

How do you test the water valve with a meter for continuity?

I assume the valve is normally closed?

Should it read OL on an ohm meter?  Or should it be closed?  Can you check the leads for voltage?  How do you tell if the valve is opening when current is applied?

Thank you for your help.

Set your meter for ohms/continuity.
Remove the wires from the water valve.
Touch the 2 meter leads to the 2 wv terminals. No reading is a bad valve.
A reading on the meter is a good valve.

Your valve is good if it worked to fill after unsticking the float switch.

To test for power at the water valve.
Remove the wires from the valve.
Insert the meter leads into the water valve wire terminals.
Set the meter for ac voltage.
Turn the machine on to wash.
Wait until the timer advances to the fill cycle and watch for a power (120 volts) reading on the meter.
If you read 120 volts through the wires and a valve does not fill the valve is bad.

I have 45 Volts form the electrical leads and 980 ohms on the valve.

45 Volts seeams like an odd number, even if a transformer is used? Is 45 Volts on the leads a problem?  Or does it have a transformer?

Thanks for your help,
Cathy

Here is a little more test information:

When touching both leads to the volt meter, I get 45.  When toching one lead to the volt meter and a ground, I get 118 amp.  And when touching the other lead to the volt meter and a ground, I get 1 amp.

Assuming you mean voltage and not amps I would say you have a bad neutral wire going to the water valve. Follow the wire with little to no voltage on it back and see if it broken someplace.

I use a test cord to power up the valve. Simple lamp cord with two female connectors. I remove the harness and slip on the clips to the valve and give it 120 to see if it slings any water out.

Thanks for all the help.  I got a new valve, hooked it to the leads and it opened.

The dish washer is working now.

I did mean volt, not amps.

Thank you all very much for the information and suggestions!
