lid switch is fine. sometimes I can get lucky by moving the basket back and forth. If I move it just right it will agitate and spin. But, if the washer is moved at all, or the load is too big or not centered properly it will stop spinning/agitating. I can try moving the basket around again, but honestly that can take hours or even days to hit the sweet spot again. Is there something in the transmission I should check?

It seems funny that the washer would not spin or agitate, yet you can see the clutch moving.

What does the washer do when it should be agitating?

As for spinning, if the clutch is spinning around on top of the transmission then the transmission should be doing it's job.

The clutch could be slipping, is the clutch oily?

There could be something holding the tub from spinning, like a rag, sock, etc.. between the two tubs.
Feel around the top edge of the two tubs for such items.

The drive block that the inner tub attaches to could be bad.

If you remove the agitator you will be able to see that drive block.

Took the agitator off, but couldn't get the spanner nut off-parts list shows a special tool is needed.  Didn't see any socks/rags down the sides between the basket and outer tub...possibly something underneath between them? Hooked the lid switch back up, and ran through a cycle. Motor, pump, agitation, spin cycle....all worked fine. I happened to have some wet clothes lying around. Tossed in 5 tshirts and two pants-that stopped the spinning. Took clothes out, tried the spin cycle again...but basket wouldn't turn, it will spin freely with my help. I guess the agitation and spinning have nothing to do with one another. I f wet clothes stopped it from spinning, would think the weight of the water would affect the agitation-but it didn't. Can I get the spanner nut with something else, or do I need the special tool?

From all you have said, it sounds like a clutch failure. All done from underneath.

You must remove the clutch from the top of the tranny which has to be removed. Very easy to replace. If it won't wash or spin it probably is the basket drive. This ear can break and cause spinning problems but not wash problems.

Will I need to remove the pump and motor to take the tranny off?

The large white clip on the basket drive is very loose-could that be the problem? Also the clutch is a little oily, but not excessively

There all loose.

There should be no oil on the clutch.

The oil will make it slip. The clutch gets oil on it because the top seal on the transmission leaks.

Can you post a photo of the clutch?

Here is a photo of the inside of a washer cabinet that had a very leaky transmission and the clutch would spin the oil around onto the walls of the cabinet.

Does the inside of your washer cabinet have a line of oil on it about the same height as the clutch?
A lot of times the oil line inside the cabinet is not as dark looking as the one in the photo, but you will notice it if it's there.

In any case there should be no oil on the clutch.

no oil on inside of cabinet at all. I tried to send you a picture earlier, but the system said it was too big to send.

Here are the images mrceezee sent me.

The clutch is a mess and should be replaced.
If there is oil coming from the transmission then I would replace it too or repair the seal it is leaking from.

I can't tell for sure from the photo if the transmission would be leaking or not.
