LG dishwasher LDF7932ST and LE error
« on: August 24, 2014, 08:16:24 AM »
We have an LG dishwasher LDF7932ST that's a few years old. The past couple of nights it's started to throw an LE error.

We'll start it on a regular 2-hour wash cycle, and it does okay for a lot of it. But then in the middle to later part of the two hours, it stops and displays the LE error code. At this point it's full of water, and the soap dispenser is open and empty, so it's operated okay for quite a while. What I've done is turn it off and back on, then I set it on a rinse-only cycle. It seems to do this fine without any problems.

I know from other messages and the service manual that an LE is a motor error, and can mean a broken wire, an obstruction, or a burnt out motor. Would the symptoms above seem to narrow it down to one of those? What would be the best next step?

Serial Number would help narrow possible causes.

Thanks for the post. The serial number is: 005KWTA00401.

One other update. Tonight we ran the dishwasher on a Quick Wash cycle (78 minutes); it completed it without any error. The previous two nights we'd run it on a Normal cycle (2 hours) and a Quick Wash cycle, and the LE error came up sometime during both. So on top of everything else, the problem is intermittent.

Most likely causes---in the following order...

Failing Wash Motor ( http://www.appliancepartspros.com/lg-motor-assembly-wm-4681ed1004b-ap5325099.html  )

Debris in Wash Impeller Housing---requires removing filter cover inside DW (causes noise complaints and/or "LE" error)

Nearly severed/broken wire at the bottom of the door (must remove front panel to inspect)
This dishwasher DOES NOT have the older tar-like insulation and therefore wiring within the door---is NOT a known issue for problems.
Wire(s) can still be an issue at the very bottom of the door (from opening & closing the door---pulled apart)

Other known issues with this dishwasher model (and build date)

If the Serial Number is within the range of 501KWxxx through 011KWxxx---the Guide Assy has been re-designed to prevent *very random* water leaks at the lower corners of the door.
The part number (4975ED1005B) has *not* been changed.
Replacement Guide Assy must have a build date (ink on part) of November 2010 or newer

The Chopper/Mascerator Blade within the Sump Assy (located at the center of the tub inside the DW) has been changed from part number (5832DD4001A) to (5832DD4001B)---to eliminate grinding/whirring noise that occurs during the *wash cycle*.

The Filter Assy (ADQ32598202) has been re-designed (smaller holes) to prevent hard debris from entering the lower portion of the Sump Assy---which can at a minimum cause noisy Wash Motor or Drain Motor operation.
Debris in the Wash Motor/Impeller housing *could* cause potential "LE" errors (again this would be in addition to noisy wash cycle operation).
Debris which enters the Drain Motor housing *could* cause a potential "OE" error (no drain) or noise during the drain cycle
The part number for the re-designed Filter Assy has NOT been changed.
Replacement Filter Assy must have a build date after Oct 22 2012

Thanks for all the information, I really appreciate it.

Meanwhile, we've now run the dishwasher two nights in a row without any errors. I think I'll watch it for a couple of more nights to see how it goes. If errors recur, I'd probably remove the filter cover inside the dishwasher to check for debris in the wash impeller housing. After that, probably consider pulling the motor. I'll post back with updates.

Update - when we got up this morning, we saw that the dishwasher threw an LE error last night during a Quick Wash cycle. Like before, I turned it off and on, set it on a rinse-only cycle and now it seems to be going through that without any problem.

I'd like to watch it (more closely) for a few more nights to see if there is a pattern to exactly when in the cycle the error is occurring. If the time is random, then gradual motor failure would seem like a strong possibility. But if it keeps erroring out at the same time, it would make me wonder -- what's the machine doing at that particular time?

Thanks. I have a copy the LG LDF7932 service manual, and it has a page on Test Mode (see attached). However, I'm not seeing anything there on a sequence to check Wash Motor RPM. Is that available for all models, or only the ones mentioned in the LG article you posted?

We've run the dishwasher for several nights now without any errors. I figure I'll wait until the errors start recurring to try to diagnose it.

In the meantime, we've noticed that in general the dishwasher is noisier than when we bought it. A sound file with 10 seconds is here:

www.inkbox.net/house/dishwasher.mp3

When I do get to the point of working on it, are there parts I can replace that should make it quieter?

Thanks, I'll check that out when we get to that point. Can that part be swapped out accessing it from inside the dishwasher chamber when the unit is installed, or is it normal to pull the dishwasher to get at those components from underneath?

If you flip the blade over you don't have to change it ;)

The Chopper *must* be replaced.

The original---has a pointed tip (similar to an indian arrowhead)

This shape---causes noise.

The corrected/replacement Chopper does not.

So, can the chopper be replaced by accessing it inside the dishwasher's tub when the unit is installed under the counter? Or is the normal thing to pull the dishwasher to get at the chopper from underneath?
